War, what is it good for? Well, it keeps Vlogger busy!
Wow! An Actual Military Post on Milgeek! LOL
Yeah, I've been getting a bit lapse regarding the nature of my content on Milgeek. The clue is in the title for goodness sake!😆
Indeed, when I first started Milgeek many, many years ago (this version of the blog is the forth iteration) it was exclusively military themed commentary, but it's slowly morphed into my general hobby blog. So I think it's time I sneaked a military post back in...
This Year's Military Vlog Favourites
Now this isn't a Top 5 in the sense of a league table - were that the case there probably wouldn't be all that much change in this list from last year's list - so this is really my 'top 5 of the moment'. That way I get some new content creators in the list! Let's go... (In no particular order, btw...)
5. Grim Reapers - Could An A-10 Warthog Stop The 1940 Blitzkrieg?
I love 'what if' scenarios, particularly when it comes to military history. One of my favourite sci-fi movies that exemplifies this is 'The Final Countdown' (1980) where a 'modern' American aircraft carrier is sent back in time to Pearl Harbour prior to the Japanese attack... Do they change history by taking on the Japanese? And could a modern aircraft carrier take on the whole 1940's Japanese fleet?
The Grim Reapers try to answer these sort of fictitious historic situations...
The computer simulation game DLC World highlights how computer simulations are getting so sophisticated these days that they can be used to model hypothetical military actions. How accurate these simulations actually are is up for debate, but that's kinda the point of 'what ifs'. If nothing else they are very entertaining.
4. Ed Nash's Military Matters - Belgian Beauties; The Renard Fighters
Ed's 'Forgotten Aircraft' series is one of my perennial favourites, I love hearing about unheard of types or planes which could have been world beaters but fell at the final hurdle. This particular episode is typical in that the Renard fighter must have seemed like Belgium could have trumped the Me109...But...
I love these 'what if' histories and I have to say, in this case, it was just the timing that seemed to have prevented the Belgians fielding their own Spitfire! Great work by Ed, the whole series has been very informative.
3. Military History Visualized - German Wespe vs M7 Priest
MHV gives a decidedly German view on World War 2 weaponry which is actually very interesting. Not so much because I have a particular interest in how 'leet' the Nazis were (unlike many online gamers who seem to always have a good excuse about why the Nazis lost the war) but because these video often give an insight into how the Germans viewed the Allies, Allied tactics and weapons.
Aside for being fantastically well researched, as a Graphic Designer I appreciate MHV's nice use of infographics.
2. Task & Purpose - Why the UK Challenger Tank is So Hot Right Now
T&P is a US veterans view on contemporary military matters. I'm always interested to hear what ex-service personnel have to say on military events and technology as they often seem to ditch the hype and point out the good and bad points of a particular talking point based on the experience of a guy who's had boots on the ground. I don't always agree with T&P's observations, but I like to hear alternative view points...
1. Mark Felton Productions - Europe's Tiniest Armies
Well, I couldn't leave out at least one of the old favourites. Mark is something of a legend for his solidly researched, slightly left of field or semi-obscure military histories...And I love 'em!
This episode is typical of what I find with Mark's production, they typically answer questions that the casual military history nerd spends their time wondering about! Spookily I was (honestly) just thinking about what country had the smallest army just the other day (really...)! 😁
----------------------------------------------
So, there we go. This year's favourite 'watches', at least from the point of view of military themed videos. I could have easily make a Top 10 or even Top 20 but that just goes to show how I have a LOT of time on my hands these days to scour YouTube for good stuff.
