Battling To Regain (Some) Of My Painting Skills!
Phew! At Last! (I Finished Something!)
Well, it's taken a while and there has been a few accidents and re-paints, but I've completed my latest Ork painting test.
I say my latest as this is really the THIRD attempt at doing a test paint for my GAMES WORKSHOP AGE OF SIGMAR ORRUK set that my wife gave me for Christmas. The first was done a while back and I thought that it came out a bit too green (nearly lime green) for my liking...
My second attempt - which was done more recently - was a complete shambles as I chose a test model that was completely unsuitable as a representation of the GW Orruk style of Orcs, being too small and more like a 'Half-Ork' figure...

Above: My next test figure, a 'half-Orc' type model by REAPER miniatures. Completely wrong scale compared to the GW Orcs, so I gave up on this! |
But - like Goldilocks - the third try was the charm, and the 'Iron Skull' 3D printable models that I bought were just right as stand-ins for my Orruks...

Above: Third attempt underway. This time I toned down the green skin and was a bit happier with the more muted effect. |
Anyway, after some trial and error with different paints and painting techniques I *think* I have worked out a recipe for how I will tackle the Games Workshop Orcs. This might seem like a lot of trouble to go to by way of preparation but as a present from my wife I really want to make a good job of them.
The finished 'test Orc' has it's pros and cons, it is the darker green skin that I was after, rather than the quasi-neon green Orcs that some people seem to prefer. But my detailed painting is - as I suspected it might be - a bit *vague* and not as sharply defined as experienced miniature painters can get...
But, I'll have to live with that, my eyesight and shaky hands restrict how well I can do the fine details.
So, here we are...

NEXT: Well, I printed out a couple more of the 'Iron Skull' Orcs models so I might as well test my painting recipe on them to make sure my system and paint picks do work.
