Moving Onto My Next Gaslands Project

Making A ‘Death Proof’ Tribute

I’m slowly moving through my extensive cue of modelling projects and I am now back to one of my GASLANDS ideas. Just to quickly recap what Gaslands is - it’s a tabletop game which utilised Hotwheels or Matchbox scale cars to fight out a sort of ‘Mad Max’ post-apocalyptic race.

Part of the attraction of this hugely popular game is that you are encouraged to make your own car, usually by converting toy cars and arming them for battle.

Anyway, as a big Mad Max fan I like the aesthetic and the challenge of the small scale modelling - and the fact that is very tongue in cheek and kinda everything goes so you can really let your imagination loose.

Car Number 2 Design Choice

My first attempt at Gaslands car was a real rust buggy! This was very much inspired both by the Hotwheels model but - firstly - by the sort of buggies used in the movie 'Mad Max: Fury Road'...

Now, having done a 'rust bucket' I really wanted to try out a different look, something based on a classic muscle car, for example. I keep my my eye out for nice looking American muscle car models when I am shopping and sneakily tip a Hotwheels car into the shopping cart when the wife isn't looking! 😉

This month I found the Hotwheels 1969 Dodge Charger, a lovely model (I am a big Dodge Charger fan) and it also happens to be one of my favourite movie cars. Obviously it is most famous for it being the 'baddies' car in the legendary chase scene from the 1968 movie 'BULLIT' with Steve McQueen. Here it was a  1968 Dodge Charger R/T 440, but my favourite appearance of this model Dodge was from Tarantino's 2007 flick 'DEATH PROOF'.

The primary "Death Proof" car is a 1969 Dodge Charger driven by Kurt Russell’s character, Stuntman Mike. The vehicle is a modified stunt car featuring a roll cage and a crash bar down the centre of the chassis, designed to allow the driver to survive high-speed collisions that would kill passengers,

(There were actually two 'Stunt Man Mike' cars used - a Charger and a Nova.)

I wondered, what would have happened if Stunt Man Mike had made it to the apocalypse? 😏

So I decided to design a GASLANDS version of the Dodge, upgraded with suitable armour and weapons and given a post-apocalyptic paint job!!! I usually work from an idea in my head for my GASLANDS conversions but in this case I decided it would be fun and useful if I took a snap of my model undergoing it's conversion and as ChatGTP to finish off the look!

Above: My Hotwheels Dodge stripped and with it's main weapon added. I built the blade machine and thought that I might name the car 'Slice'n'Dice'!

Above: ChatGTP made quite a good stab at how the car might look in a Mad Max setting!

So this is where I am at the moment with the model. I'm just about to add some more body work detail and then the armour and weapons. Finally, I will apply the infamous 'Death Proof' skill and lightning emblem on a matt black finish BUT give it some post-apocalyptic wear and tear!

We shall see how this goes!
