My First Resistance Fighter Loss, Goodbye Peter

The Immersive Nature of ARMA Reforger: Freedom Fighters

Much to my surprise - as this game is essentially a 'hardcore Tactical shooter sim' - I have become really embroiled in the role playing nature of the Freedom Fighters mod. This has really been nothing like any 'battlefield shooter' that I have played before, the 'sim' aspect of the gameplay really sets this aside from other military combat games - like Battlefield, CoD or Ghost Recon - that I have played in the past... And I am loving it!

It's so easy to get carried away with the resistance fighter theme of the mod, with a gaming world that is made all the more immersive by ARMA Reforger's game mechanics and graphics. So it's perhaps not surprising that when I lost my player character 'Peter the teacher' that it really had an effect.

I'd lost a couple of the characters before, but as this was early in my game career and because I was just learning the game I wasn't so invested in them. But with Peter I was starting to feel like I was making some real progress and was starting to even build him a backstory...

RiP Peter The Teacher

I had imagined that Peter - I called him that as I could not pronounce the name that the game mod had provided for him - was a young dedicated educator and Everon (the island where this game takes place that is under Soviet occupation) patriot.

Not content to see his pupils being decoronated by the Soviet political commissars which oversaw the state education in Everon since the occupation Peter decided that he must do something to help the resistance and try and fight against the assimilation of Everon's youth into the Communist empire. So he joined the resistance.

While - at first - his role in the underground resistance was trivial - simply distributing printed propaganda and spreading the word - he started to become more proactive and eventually became involved with some pro-active insurgency, including ambushing Soviet patrols.

Peter really proved his worth to the local resistance cell when he attacked and wiped out a small Soviet encampment which had moved into his area and his promotion led him to take on a greater role and the eventual founding of the regional rebel encampment.

Sadly, it was not one of the more dangerous direct offensive confrontations that led to his demise but rather - while undertaking the rather mundane but still illegal posting of resistance literature - that Peter was spotted by a Soviet patrol and was shot while trying to escape them.

His dedication to the cause and sacrifice is an inspiration to other Everonian patriots and his loss with not be forgotten. RiP Peter The Teacher...

And so, the resistance continues and others will take his place...

Vive la révolution
