Has My Infatuation  With Japanese Model Railway Modelling Fizzled Out?

Ooops, We Have A Problem!

The short answer to the question is ‘NO’ - I haven’t gone off model railways. But, unfortunately, when I started building up a collection of Japanese N Gauge trains- with a view to creating a modest layout - I actual had a little space to set up a board on which I could tinker about with track and trains…

Until I didn’t! 😖

Above: Before I stopped doing MILGEEKACHOO projects I *think* I was actually making some good progress in improving my modelling skills. I was really pleased with how my N Gauge gas station build was going. Can I pick up where I left off?

The down side of my man cave also acting as our house’s ’emergency storage space’ was that I underestimate the sheer amount of ‘junk’ that we would accumulate. The sheer convenience of having a room that we could ‘temporarily’ (NOT) stick stuff ‘until we find other space for it’ was far, far too handy and very soon I was pushed out of my man-cave by boxes upon boxes of spare crap!

Because of this my ‘MILGEEKCHOO’ projects simply ground to a halt.

Space, The Final Frontier!

OK, so space is my major problem. I do have a pretty large attic and in theory I should have enough real estate up there to accommodate all my various hobbies (the number of hobbies I have being another issue), BUT because I have to compete with the need for general storage space for house ‘junk’ I am continually losing much of the space I ‘have’ (it’s a theoretical ‘have’)! 😑

N Guage Gas Station Model Status
Above: I managed to find all the various parts that I had made for my gas station model and I dusted them off. I now have to think very hard about what my plan was for this project in order to pick it up from where I left off! Lots of head scratching!

I am constantly fighting to reclaim my space, but it’s a process that’s rather like painting the Forth Bridge. No sooner have I finished one round of ‘clearing out’ than I discover that we’ve been slyly filling the space I have made with ‘stuff’! (And don’t get me started about Christmas decorations!!!)

So Is MILGEEKACHOO Coming Back?

I hope so. I still really want to make a little layout based on a rural Japanese town. I have more than enough track and rolling stock to populate a nice little railway. BUT, until I have enough free space to ear-mark for a 6x4 table (or whatever) there is little point in undertaking serious work on the project.

So, in the meantime I might concentrate on making the occasional N Gauge scale Japanese village building. The most immediate project I have in mind - which will be Project #4 of this winter’s schedule - will be finishing off my 1970s themed Japanese gas station.

At least my model building ideas are modular enough to be stored as stand alone display items until the day I can start laying them down on a fixed railway layout.

Above: One of the things that had me pause this project was that I wanted to include the 'telegraph' and power poles around the gas station. Japan is famouse for it's power line 'spaghetti' and I wanted to hint at this even if I didn't go as far as to model the wires themselves. This video was a good find as it discusses the Japanese use of power lines.
